53. HOKKEI (1780-1850). The painter Godoshi. (Sold)

TOTOYA HOKKEI  (1780-1850)

The Chinese painter Wu Daozi (J: Godoshi) sits on a stool in front of a
painting stretched on frame. He holds two brushes in one hand
while finishing a portrait of Zhong Kui, a legendary figure known in
Japan as Shōki, the demon queller. In Japan the painting of Shōki in
red colour was believed to protect from smallpox.
