HOKKEI (1780-1850). Dawn at Takanawa
Artist:
Totoya Hokkei (1780-1850)
Subject:
Dawn at Takanawa, and the Ōkido gate, located southeast of Edo.
Title:
Unclear red seal on top left, probably referring to the place's name.
Description:
Ōkido translates as "large wooden gate". In 1710 this gate was replaced. In the lower part of the print we see the remains of the two stone walls and one of the ox charts used in heavy urban construction work and normally stationed there. This is the last gate that travelers coming from Kyoto along the Tōkaidō Road entered Edo and where they had to show their travel documents. Traditionally, Ōkido is also the place where relatives and friends greeted people traveling west along the Tōkaidō road. Takanawa has been depicted in numerous other prints, particularly by Hiroshige.
