Kōgo with herons

A fine incense holder (kōgo) lacquered in medium and high relief (hiramaki-e, takamakie-e) in gold and colored lacquer on a background sprinkled with minute gold leaf squares (kirikane).
The lid is decorated with two gray herons in the water surrounded by lotus plants.
The inside of the lid with maple leaves on a nashiji background.
