Shikishibako

Shikishibako

A box for square paper sheets (shikishibako) used for poetic compositions or painting. The box is made of lacquered wood decorated in light relief (hiramaki-e) in gold lacquer with details in lead with stylised maritime pines in the neo Rimpa style popularised by Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942) in the early decades of the 20th century.
The box contains four square sheets (shikishi) with poems written in black ink on paper decorated with gold powder. One of the sheets is dated Showa 17 (1942).
