Kogo with two shōjō

Kogo with two shōjō

An incense holder (kogo) decorated with two shōjō, one is intent on reading near a large sake jar while the other drinks from a large cup. The shōjō were mythical creatures of Japanese folklore characterized by long red hair and a penchant for sake.
The two figures are made with the togidashi technique on a roironuri lacquer background (glossy black lacquer). Togidashi consists of drawing the decorative motif with colored and gold lacquer, when it is dry it is covered with black lacquer which is then smoothed to reveal the underlying design.
The edges of the box and the lid are ringed in metal
