Rimpa Style Box
A large paulownia (kiri) wood box decorated on the lid and four sides with folding fans (ogi) made in relief with gold lacquer and mother-of-pearl applications.
The interior is covered in marbled Japanese paper (suminagashi).
The decorative motif is inspired by the typical designs of the Rimpa school founded by Ogata Korin (1658-1716). The Rimpa school style had a revival in the 19th and early 20th centuries and spread through books illustrated by Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1828) and later by Ikeda Koson (1801-1866), influencing both painting and lacquer art.
