Water jar

Large stoneware water jar from the Tatenoshita kiln.

According the exhibition catalog by Robert Moes and Nancy Eickel, Mingei : Japanese folk art from the Montgomery Collection, the Tatenoshita kilns were located in the town of Nakamura. They produced utilitarian wares for the common people throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Large water jars like this were kept outside the back door of every house in case of fire.
These jars were build of coils and then finished on the wheel. Decoration consisted of rice-brand ash glaze running down the sides in long streaks.
