A parade float (yamaboko), used during festivals in Kyoto and Edo, dedicated to the famous episode of the duel on the Gojō bridge between the young Minamoto no Yoshitsune and the warrior monk Benkei.

Hokusai Taitō aratame Katsushika Iitsu no fude. Poems by Nanpōgaki Makaze, Ryūsai Chimata, and Yomo Magao of the Yomogawa poet group.

A rare surimono of which we have found only one other example in the collection of the Portland Art Museum, n.32.603. A surimono very similar in composition, but depicting a festival float with another historical episode, the Battle of the Uji River, is illustrated in Mirviss, Joan B. and John T. Carpenter. Conditions:
Good impression, colors slightly faded, the Ryūsai printer's seal on lower right, abraded. In fair condition.
