Surimono shikishiban, 21,1x18,6 cm. Part of a series of five surimono forming a full view of a stage with ten dancers.

Woodblock color print with use of metallic pigments.
Literature:
The complete set of five surimono in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, is described in detail and illustrated in Roger Keyes, The Art of Surimono no. 48-51. More recently another impression of this print has been illustrated in Hanaoka and Pollard, Plum Blossom & Green Willow. Japanese surimono poetry from the Asmolean Museum, Oxford 2018, no. 21. The impression in the Ashmolean Museum is missing the poetry emblem on the man's shoulder and for this reason is considered a late copy.
