A geisha dressed as a man holding a lantern during the festival. In Yoshiwara, the pleasure district of Edo, a festival called niwaka (impromptu) was celebrated during the eighth month. Courtesans dressed in various costumes performed lion dances and impromptu skits on the main street, Nakano-chō.
